Gearies Primary School

The School Sport Premium

Our school uses the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport for all pupils. Funding is used to broaden the range of activities available, increase participation, and build staff confidence and expertise so that improvements are long-lasting.

A key priority is the development of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA). Through experiences such as bouldering, climbing and nature-based learning, pupils are able to develop physical skills, resilience, teamwork and problem-solving while building a stronger connection with the natural environment. These activities support the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum requirement for Outdoor and Adventurous Activity and help engage pupils who may be less motivated by traditional team sports.

The funding also supports the development of nature-based learning opportunities, including nature therapy visits to local woodlands and outdoor challenges such as orienteering, rope work and collaborative problem-solving tasks. These experiences promote confidence, wellbeing and independence while encouraging pupils to be active in outdoor environments.

We also work with specialist coaches and local providers to deliver high-quality sessions and provide professional development for staff. This ensures that teachers gain the skills and confidence to continue delivering these activities independently, supporting the long-term sustainability of our PE provision.

Another key focus is increasing participation and confidence for girls in sport and competition. We use the funding to create inclusive opportunities such as girls-only clubs, social sport sessions and targeted competitions that encourage participation in activities such as football and Tag Rugby. By working with female coaches and developing positive role models, we aim to build confidence and inspire more girls to take part in school sport.

Through these initiatives, our Sports Premium funding helps ensure that all pupils have access to a broad, engaging and inclusive PE curriculum, while developing the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed to remain active throughout their lives.
