The Mayor of London's Volunteering Awards celebrate the individuals, teams and corporate volunteers who are making outstanding contributions to their communities and helping to make London the best city it can be.
Gearies Primary School has proudly won three community awards.
Our Cultural Trust social change action group won the London Mayor's "Team London Community School Awards" for their contributions to raising awareness of and acting against discrimination against vulnerable adults and children. Part of this work saw the Cultural Trust reclaim an allotment site, set to become a car park, for a local centre for adults with learning disabilities. Together, the centre and our school gardening clubs shared expertise, skills and voluntary power to grow a targeted 3468 tomato plants which were then harvested and turned into soup for Redbridge food bank charity.
The Allotment, once set to be a car park, is now a large-scale community garden.
Our “Hurricanes” programme won the “Activity and Wellbeing Award.” This award recognises volunteering that encourages sporting or physical activity that increases physical and/or mental wellbeing.
“The Hurricanes” is an inclusive tag rugby project. A growing partnership between: Gearies Primary School, Hatton Primary School, Bancroft Rugby Club, West Hatch High School, Team London, The England Rugby Coaching Community Team, The Woodbine Clubhouse, Applied Education Solutions and the “WE” charity.
This group served to provide an opportunity for children with autism and learning needs to play competitively alongside their friends in local school tournaments.
“The Hurricanes” programme also won, “The Mayor’s Choice Award” for outstanding projects designed and delivered through The Mayor of London’s Small Grants for Schools initiative.
